For week two of the One Four Challenge, a photo processing project kindly hosted by Robyn Gosby at Captivate Me, I am continuing my wander among the mangroves.
Week Two Process
This week I wanted to ‘simplify’ the image and bring out the foliage and aerial roots more. So using my Week One edit as the base, I imported the image into Foto Sketcher and selected the Cartoon pre-set, tweaked the settings and added some texture.
Here is how the image now looks:
I have put the original, last week’s and this week’s image in a slide show, so you can see the progression.
As always, I welcome your feedback.

its fascinating what you do with these images. look forward to seeing you soon.
Thanks Chris – it’s lucky I scheduled all these posts in August… Couldn’t work on this with what has happened!
I love the mangroves, they have such interesting twists and turns. I quite like what you have done with your photo Christine and cant wait to see the next two! 🙂
Hi Kaz, they are amazing trees. Thanks for your feedback.
Its evened out the tonal differences quite nicely this way, interesting.
Thanks Stacey.
I love this edit…a nice subtle cartoon effect
Glad you like it😊
I don’t normally like the “cartoon” presets in apps, but whatever you did to tweak this one is great. I like how you’ve kept the textures and colors. Great edit, Chris!
Hi Kirsten, sometimes you just have to try. Thanks for the kind feedback.
I prefer no 1. But it is interesting what you did to the trees and shadows
We’ll see how we go with the next ones! Thanks Sue.
Nice work! But I prefer No. 1.
Ah well, we’ll see how the next two go!
I’m not crazy about the banding that occurs in the sky, but the cartoon styling make the rest of this image very appealing. This is a great image for experimenting with these different looks!
Hi Joanne, yes it is fun to experiment and you can really change the mood. I love mangrove trees and this line is particularly good for different treatments.
What an fabulous effect – it really makes the trees look so interesting! 🙂
Thanks Joanne – those trees are amazing anyway… I don’t know what it is – may be the intricate network of aerial roots.
Yes, I think it’s the aerial roots for sure. Seriously, how do those roots remain stable in what always appears to be just mud?!
Their tangled network of roots spread far and wide and hold them upright.
Makes a great difference to the photo. It is as if the trees are just touched by a few shadowy lines! Love it
That’s a nice way to describe the effect. Thank you and thanks also for the follow.
You are welcome!
I can imagine a cartoon character such as Wiley Coyote lurking among the roots, just waiting his chance. Very effective.
Lol – there are lots of creatures lurking in mangrove!
I love the etched look of the leaves in this effect!! Great work Chris!
Thank you Cybele!
Hi Chris – Simplifying your image for this week, has almost made it more about patterns. Love those crazy tree roots and quite like what has happened to the sky. A good experiment 😃
Thanks Robyn – the repeated patterns always interest me. Thanks for commenting.
Me too Chris 😀 Always a pleasure x
I like the cartoon effect. I really like how the ground became really interesting and the richer colors as well, great job. 🙂
Thanks Nic – it’s interesting how the edges of the trees are more pronounced in this one.
