Related to coots and moorhens, the Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphirio) is an unmistakable waterbird. Although quite common, it is resplendent in its purple and red colours and is the dazzling subject of our #21 Bird Photography Challenge.
Perched on very long and fine reddish legs, the Black-Winged Stilt (Himantopus H lucocephalus) is an attractive pied shorebird with an elegant gait. I fell in love at first sight with this eye-catching wader, which makes a graceful #14 Bird Photography Challenge.
During a wander through the Lake Borrie Wetlands near Melbourne with photographer Leanne Cole, we spotted an odd looking and very distinctive waterbird: the Pink-Eared Duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus). This unmistakeable and spectacular duck, so different looking to any other, had to take pride of place as the star of #12 Bird Photography Challenge.
