It had ben three months since our last decent sailing adventure and we were having withdrawal symptoms. So over the Easter break we took an offshore trip to Deal Island, in the middle of Eastern Bass Strait. “What? 3 months later, you post a blog on this?” I hear you say. Well things have been a bit hectic. Sailing has been interrupted by the four letter word WORK, and the Take It Easy website has only just been built. So this is our first ever blog post!
Bass Strait Islands
The Kent Group, Eastern Bass Strait
When we talk about Bass Strait, most people are surprised to hear that there is actually a lot to see: in fact some 80 islands, many offering pristine, secluded anchorages. Deal Island is part of the Kent Group, a small cluster of about eight islands situated half way between Wilson’s Promontory and Flinders Island.

We make it to East Cove on Deal Island before dark, after an all day motor-sail from Port Albert. The evening light is soft, the bay is serene, our spirits are high.
It is a wonderful to share our love for these wild shores with our friend Sue at last. The scenery is magnificent as always: pristine and crystal clear aqua water close to the white sandy beach, ultramarine further out, rocky outcrops and rugged cliffs, underlined by a bright orange strip of lichen.
We spend a few days exploring the island and its wild and rugged coast. We anchor in East, Garden, Winter and Squally Coves, as the wind pursues us around the island. We walk every path: to Barn Hill for panoramic views of the Kent Group, to the lighthouse, to the various beaches. Everywhere we find beauty, isolation, abundant wildlife. We experience the island in all its moods: brilliant sunshine, misty afternoons, rainy spells, and windy days.
